The tale of the Brown Dog started back in June of 2001 with Pacific Street Pizza on the west end of town. From this location, we developed a reputation for great classic American style pizza and our signature YX cheesesteak sub—which gets its name from the license plates Colorado once issued to residents of San Miguel county that started with the letters “YX”. Eventually, we outgrew the Pacific Street Pizza location, and moved to Colorado Avenue as well as changing our name to Brown Dog Pizza.
The distinctive name “Brown Dog” comes from the owners, Dan Lynch and Jeff “Smoke” Smokevitch, chocolate Labrador retrievers–Phlounder and Boone. Dan originally hails from New England, and is consequently a die-hard Boston sports team fan (as evidenced in the sports memorabilia that adorns the Brown Dog’s walls). Jeff comes from Michigan where he attended the University of Michigan and played football on the 1997 National Championship-winning team. Their successful partnership of more than a decade has resulted in the Brown Dog Pizza you see today.
In 2010, owner, Jeff Smokevitch attended the International School of Pizza, and has since assisted legendary Pizzaioli and Master Instructor, Tony Geminani, in several more sessions at the school. Jeff, under Tony’s tutelage, learned that combining the best quality ingredients along with attention to detail makes the best pizzas.
Geminani was so impressed by his pupil, he asked Jeff to be on the World Pizza Champions team in the Fall of 2010. Smokevitch has gone on to enter several other competitions, and Brown Dog’s pizza was judged as the World’s Best Pizza in the American pan division with a 1st Place finish at the International Pizza Expo 2013. As well as a 2nd place in the final round of the expo’s challenge. Read further about the Pizza Championships here.
